Street Crew makes bust in mall washroom

An 18-year-old male was arrested last week at Sunnycrest Mall and is facing charges of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Members of the RCMP Street Crew were at the mall on a routine foot patrol last Friday and noticed a group of young males entering the washroom after observing the police.

"Members entered the washroom and obtained grounds to search an 18-year-old male," said Const. Andy Cook. "Police located five individually packaged baggies of marijuana, a small amount of cash and a cellular phone. The male was arrested and the items seized."

The suspect was released on a promise to appear in Sechelt provincial court on May 24.

"The Sunnycrest Mall is located in close proximity to Elphinstone Secondary School. Under the controlled drugs and substances act, a person found selling drugs at or in close proximity to a school is considered to be an aggravating factor on sentencing," Cook said. "The Street Crew and youth detail will continue to actively target any persons identified as being involved in trafficking controlled substances at or near a school."

Police are requesting the continued assistance of the public in identifying and targeting drug dealers on the Coast. Anyone with information can contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 or call Crimestoppers at 604-740-(TIPS).
