A 27-year-old Sechelt male is in police custody following a two-hour armed standoff Monday afternoon after police attended his residence following a report of an alleged stabbing.

On Jan. 9, Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to St. Mary's Hospital after staff had reported a man at the hospital with a stab wound.

Police spoke with the victim who advised that his step-son had stabbed him with a knife following an argument, said Cpl. Steve Chubey in a news release. The victim told police that his step-son threatened to kill himself, police and other family members.

Chubey said police attended the residence, located on Dusty Road in Sechelt to investigate and were met by the suspect, armed with a knife, who fled on foot after threatening to kill police.

A foot chase ensued and the police cornered the suspect on the beach of Sechelt Inlet, added Chubey. Police negotiated with the suspect for nearly two hours, who eventually dropped the knife and surrendered himself unharmed to police.

Chubey said the suspect has not been named, as charges have not been sworn yet before the courts.

RCMP are seeking charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries.
