Solutions sought for climbing wall

The climbing wall at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre has come under dispute in recent weeks because of the difficulty it creates for users of aquafit classes to see and hear their instructor.

Some residents have expressed disdain at the prospect of the climbing wall being removed, a necessity due to both government regulations and manufacturer's specifications for the pool.

The climbing wall's location is one that cannot be changed, due to regulatory requirements to have clear paths to exit the pool facility in an emergency.

It's a problem that the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) board has asked staff to find a solution for, through the exploration of alternative recreational structures at the pool.

"What we're trying to do is to facilitate a piece of equipment for youth. We're just looking at other options," explained recreation manager Bruce Bauman.

The climbing wall will not likely form a solution to providing equipment geared towards the youth as it's "in the only place it can be."

Staff have been contacting other facilities to find out possible alternatives, but users of the pool will have to wait for the board's decision.

"We'll be reporting back in May," Bauman said.
