The 21st Annual Sleepy Hollow Rod Run was a huge success this year with over 450 street rods, hot rods, collector cars and some daily drivers who made the run from Hackett Park to Redrooffs Road in Halfmoon Bay to be cheered on by the largest group of spectators ever.
“The participants raved about the overwhelming support and cheering of the fans who lined the roads to applaud us on,” Coasters Car Club media liaison Jac Cawsey said. “Even better were the groups of fans that participated in the first-ever contest of [dressing] in a theme for the drivers to see.”
A large contingent of fans who decorated themselves in a Christmas theme were the overall winners this year. They received a banner from the Coasters Car Club to show they have bragging rights for next year. Second place went to the Zombies, while five other groups of spectators received a special engraved mug to show the car club’s appreciation for their enthusiasm.
The Rod Run was followed up by a large number of cars heading to the Blue Ocean Golf Club for burgers and to be entertained by Ben Klein – better known as “Elvis.” Klein is a top entertainer from the U.S. who placed as first runner-up in the Elvis Competition in Memphis, Tenn.
It was deemed a fabulous evening for the participants and spectators alike – however, there were a few bad apples in the bunch who placed the Rod Run in jeopardy this year.
“These are a few who thought [they could get] their 15 seconds of thrills by doing burnouts, [which] could ruin the Rod Run in the following years,” Cawsey said. “The Coasters carry insurance for the run and it only needs one of these thrill-seeking show-offs to ruin it for all. If another car was hit or a child run over by these inconsiderate people, it could mean the end of the best rod run you can go on. If you want to do burnouts, go to the drag races on Sunday.”
Club president Ken Begg stressed that the drivers who did the burnouts were not part of the show – “they just joined in the run after we left the park,” he said.
Saturday saw 365 cars on Cowrie Street and some of the side streets for the public’s viewing pleasure.
“The day was a huge success,” Cawsey said. “Kudos to the Coasters members for putting on a very memorable show.”
Guests came from Washington, Oregon, California, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The Sleepy Hollow Rod Run will return bigger and better next year, according to Cawsey. They have already started taking applications for people to return once again.
