In a members' statement to the Legislative Assembly Oct. 17, Powell River - Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons, Opposition Critic for Tourism, Sports and the Arts, drew attention to the negative impact of hazing on our youth.

"I rise today to speak about an issue that, I believe, doesn't get the attention it needs," Simons addressed the House.

"In the last week we've seen reference to this issue in the national media on two occasions. The issue is hazing. The issue is of concern to all of us, because we all probably know people who have been subject to this form of abuse."

Simons said hazing ceremonies are counter to the principles of co-operation, teamwork and looking out for fellow players.

Hazing ceremonies have raised considerable controversy recently, sparked by two recent incidents in Montreal and Windsor. Hazing, often considered a type of initiation ceremony, goes well beyond harmless rites. In the past, serious injuries and even death have been connected to hazing activities.

"When you hear the words of Ray Ferraro and Kelly Hrudey, who both say unequivocally that hazing does nothing to build team spirit, it does nothing to promote cohesion, it does nothing to teach the values that sport can offer us Ñ we should listen," Simons said.
