Sechelt Indian Band members voted overwhelmingly against Pan Pacific Aggregates' mining proposal in last Saturday's referendum.

Of the 390 eligible voters, 168 turned out to the polls to cast their ballots, according to chief electoral officer Ben Pierre Jr. In answer to the question whether to support Pan Pacific's mining proposal in shishalh Nation territory, 130 voted no and 35 voted yes. Three ballots were spoiled.

The ballot count was run by Pierre along with a deputy election officer and two scrutineers from the Band. The referendum was held to give chief and council the general perception of its community on the issue. There were numerous consultation meetings before the referendum to allow voters to get informed on the issue, Pierre said.
