A section of lane behind the Golden City Restaurant (outlined in bold) is set to be closed and sold.

Council gave three readings to a bylaw for a Wharf Avenue lane closure and disposition of land.

The owners of the land around a portion of lane behind 5550 Wharf Avenue (Golden City Restaurant) is looking to buy and close a 129.2 square metre portion of roadway dedication. The applicants are to pay $81,000 and consolidate the three properties they own in the area. Staff said an appraiser determined the price.

Coun. Dianne McLauchlan said she worried the decision was hasty and that giving up public land has to be very well thought through.

Coun. Darren Inkster said this was the closure of a road that the public doesn’t use much and the location’s business does.

Coun. Alton Toth said the money gained from the sale should go toward something meaningful, rather than simply general reserves.

McLauchlan was the lone council member to vote against the proposal.

Anyone who feels they may be affected by the proposed sale can notify council through correspondence before noon, Nov. 3.
