Sechelt council granted $10,000 from its contingency funds to the syíyaya Reconciliation Movement for the three upcoming projects at its Sept. 7 regular council meeting.

Those projects include the Reconciliation Crosswalk Project, the Healing Regalia Project — which includes a community-wide ceremony and feast on Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — and the Reconciliation Pole Project scheduled to be unveiled in 2023.

syíyaya’s total budget for those projects is estimated $265,550, and as of Aug. 22, $233,270  has already been raised through various contributions.

Councillor Tom Lamb voted against, saying he would be more comfortable donating $5,000, the amount provided by the Town of Gibsons.
