It will cost $30,000 to paint lines and put up signs to make Cowrie Street one way by May, the public heard at Sechelt's April 10 committee of the whole meeting.

A staff report from director of development services Ray Parfitt stated the preliminary budget for the one-way change had been prepared and noted several agencies will be given an opportunity to comment on the plan within the next two weeks.

On the list of those asked for comment on Sechelt's plan to make Cowrie Street one way going westbound from Wharf to Ocean are the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Sunshine Coast Transit, Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, the Sechelt Downtown Business Association, the Accessibility Advisory Committee and the Sechelt Chamber of Commerce.

The one-way street plan is meant to encourage traffic to come down Cowrie and will provide angled parking stalls along one side of the street.

Henderson noted the change would create about 90 more parking stalls in downtown Sechelt.

One issue with the plan, brought up by Coun. Doug Hockley, is the parking lot outside the Pharmasave plaza. In the one-way configuration customers in that parking lot, which runs alongside Cowrie Street, would be unable to exit safely.

He challenged staff to come up with an acceptable solution before the plan is put in place.

"Next week we'll have an update and then presumably comments and referrals will come after that," Henderson noted.

Council wants to put the one-way plan in place by May 17, which is the start of the May long weekend.
