A Sechelt man is dead following a crash on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek on Friday, which resulted in the overnight closure of the highway.

First responders received a call just after 11 p.m. on May 28 after a Hyundai SUV heading towards Sechelt crashed into a utility pole at Conrad Road.

“The passenger was ejected and unfortunately did not make it,” Sunshine Coast RCMP Const. Karen Whitby told Coast Reporter.

The female driver was found trapped in the driver’s seat and was extricated by Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department first responders then airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) with serious injuries.

The common-law couple, from Sechelt and in their fifties, were the only people in the car. Next of kin have been advised.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, there were no witnesses and the driver was not impaired, Whitby said.

RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, which provides forensic analysis of collisions resulting in serious injury or death in B.C., were called in from the Lower Mainland to analyze the crash, which remains under investigation.

Traffic was re-routed from the highway down to Lower Road and remained closed until midday Saturday, with flaggers and emergency personnel remaining on scene for most of the afternoon.

The RCMP have asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call the Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266 (File number: 2021-3432).

Whitby said about 200 BC Hydro customers were left without power after the car crashed into a utility pole.

Conrad Road at the highway was the site of another collision the previous Friday.

A man in his forties was airlifted to VGH on May 21 after his motorcycle, heading towards Sechelt, slid into the ditch shortly after 6 p.m. The driver was transported to hospital in serious condition, according to BC Emergency Health Services. Whitby said the driver was not impaired.

In a 2007 safety and operation review contracted by the province, a westbound passing lane between Lower Road and Conrad Road was identified as an improvement for that section of highway.
