Search efforts exhausted for missing kayaker

Garden Bay Lake

Search efforts have been exhausted for the 59-year-old kayaker who went missing in Garden Bay Lake on Aug. 16.

Sunshine Coast RCMP media relations officer Const. Harrison Mohr said it is likely that the man drowned.

“If at any point anything else comes up from the lake that helps us to identify what happened we will look into it at that point,” Mohr said. “For now the search efforts have been exhausted.”

Search teams recovered an overturned kayak from Garden Bay Lake on the first night of the search. They believe the kayak belonged to the missing man.

After an initial search by Search and Rescue (SAR), the RCMP dive team conducted a full day search. According to Mohr, SAR continued searching for another four days after the RCMP dive team finished. After that the search was called off.

The name of the missing man has not been released.
