Sunshine Coast RCMP is asking for the public's help locating 56-year-old Greg Welstead of Gibsons, whose vehicle was found crashed into a tree Monday night with no driver.

The driver's door was left open on the vehicle reportedly a blue Isuzu, according to residents on Facebook and was discovered by police at approximately 5:50 p.m. March 12.

Welstead is described as Caucasian, 6'1 tall and around 200 pounds.

Earlier that day, his landlord had reported that Welstead had been acting out of character. Police later received information from a witness who reported seeing Welstead at approximately 3:30 p.m. walking on Reed Road, near North Road, RCMP said in a release on Tuesday morning.

Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue are working to locate him.

Friends and family members have taken to social media to spread the word of Welstead's disappearance.

According to several Coasters who have commented on a thread calling for his safe return, Welstead left home on Monday morning around 6 a.m.

His vehicle was later found on the 1500 block of Reed Road, crashed into a tree.

Those close to Welstead are concerned that he may have been injured in the accident, possibly wandering into the forest on the lower slopes of Mount Elphinstone.

Those with information on his whereabouts are encouraged to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266.

According to Mary Degan, who has been involved in the search process, SAR volunteers and dogs have canvassed the area around the crash site.

The ravine on Reed Road between North and Sullivan Roads has been checked as well, Degan said.

Heading into Thursday morning the search area was again being expanded.

The next areas to cover are very rough terrain. SAR is open to volunteers coming to help, though they need to be people with lots of back country experience and gear for being out in it, Degan said.

She recommended that residents in the area check their properties, including any structures where Welstead might have sought shelter.
