On Thursday, Sept. 4, former Mayor Bruce Milne will lead a workshop for potential candidates considering running for District of Sechelt council this November. Sponsored by the Sechelt Electors Association (SEA), the workshop's purpose is to encourage interested citizens to learn about the process and the pitfalls of running for elective office. "We want informed candidates to understand what they are getting into and to learn how to run a campaign," said SEA chair Charles Burns.

The workshop will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Community Services conference room on Inlet Avenue. Topics proposed by Milne include: What are the current issues that people will be voting on? What is the added value you will bring to council? Why would your friends and family vote for you? Why would strangers vote for you? What is your personal political message? How do you organize a campaign in a mid-size town? How much will it cost? How will it be paid for?

Those attending need not join SEA. The workshop is free and open to all potential candidates. In addition, spouses or partners are particularly welcome to attend since their participation may be helpful in making a family decision.

Advance registration is required and can be done at the SEA website: www.secheltelectors.com.
