Sea Cav on a treasure hunt for volunteers

Representatives from the Sunshine Coast Sea Cavalcade made a splash at the Town of Gibsons council meeting June 21.

After presenting a scroll of events taking place at this year's Festival, Sea Cav chair Conchita Harding gave a verbal outline of the celebration.

Marking its 43rd anniversary, the festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24, with the theme of Treasures of the Sea.

Saturday's events include a parade followed by family fun at Brothers Park. Later events also include a salmon barbecue, a family street dance and fireworks.

Sunday is also packed with events, including a pancake breakfast, a kids' fishing derby, logger sports, a performance from the Fraser Blues, a hot dog barbecue and live entertainment in Dougall Park to wrap up the festival.

Harding told council the Sea Cav committee is working with Sunshine Coast RCMP and BC Transit to ensure the event stays family friendly after last year's Saturday night street dance turned ugly with many arrests.

"No alcohol or drug use will be tolerated at any of the festival events," Harding said. "This event brings the community together and draws in economic development. But for me, the children's smiles are my pay cheque."

Although most of the itinerary is assembled, Harding said one concern is the lack of volunteers and asked council for their help.

"We'll do what we can to get you some volunteers and beat the drum," said Mayor Barry Janyk.
