Sea Cav comes off 'safe and happy'

Gibsons' 45th Sea Cavalcade was a calmer, gentler affair than last year's festival, with Sunshine Coast RCMP reporting no arrests during the weekend.

"That was the intention of making it family oriented, so everyone can feel safe and happy," Sea Cavalcade committee chair Conchita Harding said Wednesday.

The festival, which wrapped up on July 28 with the annual fireworks display, was overall "very successful" from the committee's standpoint, Harding said.

While the Saturday street dance, held this year in the afternoon, drew smaller numbers than previous years, the parade was the biggest ever, with 50 to 55 floats participating, Harding said.

And even with the diminished turnout, she said, the street dance was a true family affair, with one toddler climbing out of her stroller to dance between mom and dad.

"That to me was the highlight and pay cheque for all of us," Harding said.

The Sunday fireworks display drew a large crowd to the Landing, with some families setting up in Holland and Winegarden parks as early as 6 p.m., she added. "We got very high accolades after the fireworks."

The committee will meet later this summer for a debriefing with Town officials, RCMP, the fire department, Sunshine Coast Transit and other stakeholders, to look at ways to improve the festival for next year, Harding said.
