Gibsons Elementary
Construction is on schedule for the new Gibsons Elementary building although a drainage issue caused some flooding in one of the classrooms recently.
The leak came through a temporary wall, but "the situation was corrected" quickly according to secretary treasurer Nicholas Weswick.
The school district hopes to have the playing field resurfaced and ready for use by students soon.
Bragg recognition
Trustees will look into recognizing Frank Bragg who donated a portion of the Gibsons school grounds to the school district in 1932.
Brad Steuart came across a cairn commemorating the gift that has fallen into disrepair and he was surprised to find not many knew about Bragg or his gift to the school district. At the Oct. 8 school board meeting, he urged trustees to properly honour the man.
Trustees agreed to look into some form of commemoration noting Bragg donated the land in his wife's memory so her name should also appear in whatever recognition the school district decides upon.
Student trustee
It looks like the Coast's first student trustee will be sitting at the board table next month.
Superintendent of Schools Patrick Bocking said he has been meeting with a student group to help decide how the trustee position will unfold and whether student representatives should sit in on committee meetings in addition to regular board meetings.
Trustees agreed that academics must come first, but that if student representatives were able to sit in on committee meetings it would be beneficial.
Technology plan
This year's technology plan was presented at the Oct. 8 school board meeting. It highlights better wireless service, new computers, Internet safety and more technological training for teachers for the coming school year.
Grad survey winners
Every year the school district invites grads to fill out a survey and those who do are entered into a draw for cash prizes.
