The Sechelt Aquatic Centre is little more than a year old, but the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is already facing repair hurdles.

The swimming pool, which opened on Nov. 10, 2007, is leaking water, reported Randy Udahl, manager of parks and recreation for the SCRD.

"It is disappointing, but there are always things with new facilities you have to deal with," Udahl said.

"One leak is located in the surge tank that is used to store and restore overflow water from the pool," said SCRD communications officer Kathy Para in a news release. "The tank's concrete appears to have a weak section and a membrane will be installed to resolve the issue."

A secondary leak was identified in the pool itself and "damage to the membrane during construction is the likely cause," according to the SCRD news release. It has been treated temporarily to help stem water loss.

Udahl said it might be possible to do permanent repairs while water is still in the pool, but if not then they will be done in May during the annual shut-down for regular maintenance.

"In the meantime, water loss is being monitored daily and the pool remains safe for swimming," Udahl said.

"Pool leaks are not uncommon, and to ensure quality construction and finishing, the Sechelt Aquatic Centre has been inspected for further deficiencies and no new leaks have been found," Para added. "The costs for repair are as yet undetermined, but expected to be low."
