SCRD requires masks while exercising at fitness centres

Additional COVID-19 restrictions come into effect on April 9

SCRD facilities will require masks to be worn while exercising as of April 9.

The latest must-have exercising gear is a face mask.

Starting Friday, April 9, new mask requirements will come into effect at Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) fitness centres. This includes the gyms, fitness centres, weight rooms, pools and arenas.

Masks must be worn while exercising, according to an SCRD press release issued the day before the restrictions were set to come into effect.

The exception to the new rule includes anyone who cannot wear a mask because of a health condition, impairment including physical, cognitive or mental, and people who can’t put on or remove their own masks. Those unable to wear a mask must maintain at last three-metre distance from others in the facilities.

At pools, the only other exception is for those who are swimming or moving between pools, but physical distancing must be maintained.

At the arenas, masks are required in all common areas, but masks are only recommended while using the dry-floor surface. As soon as the user leaves the dry-floor, they must put their mask back on. Pickleball players must wear their masks at all times, even on the arena dry-floor surface.

“The SCRD’s focus continues to be on safe access to all of our facilities,” Ian Hall, the SCRD’s general manager of planning and community development, said in the press release.

“We ask that patrons at our recreation facilities continue to follow all of the guidance being put in place to keep everyone safe and healthy through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”
