The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is exploring legal action related to ongoing repairs at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre.
Built in 2008, the pool has undergone various repairs and improvements that the regional district feels may be related to the work of the original contractors that built the facility.
"We did do an assessment and we're now sort of in-camera with what we're doing, but basically we've found some discrepancies in the building process," said SCRD chair Garry Nohr. "So we're in legal action with the original contractors."
According to the SCRD, a running cost for the repairs, or what the SCRD would be seeking through legal recourse, cannot be disclosed at this time.
The regional district's lawyers have advised them to make what repairs and upgrades may be necessary and to total the bill, which could include staff hours and unnecessary maintenance costs.
Work is currently underway on the facility to correct a building envelope leak, as warm air from inside the building is escaping to the outside.
Past repairs of note include a leak in the pool, one that had to be corrected in late 2009. A shift from a salt to ultraviolet water system was also necessary.
The list of work that has been carried out on the facility does, however, include several grants that have allowed the SCRD to make the centre more energy efficient.
But, said Nohr, "since we've [opened] the pool, we've had to make some changes because some things were not put in correctly."
In order to protect their legal position, the regional district cannot currently release more details relating to the matter.
