May 15 to 21 is local government awareness week in B.C, and in honour of this week, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is inviting all members of the community to participate in an essay contest.

Running until May 27, participants will have a chance to write about what they would do if they were the mayor or chairperson of their community? What would be their goals and objectives? What would they change or do differently?

Judging for this contest will be based on effort, originality, knowledge of local government, and literary talent. The winner for the adult category will receive a three-month recreation lifestyle membership worth $200, and the winner of the youth (19 and under) category will receive an iPod Touch.

"The contest aims to generate public awareness about the roles and responsibilities of local government and to encourage the public to participate in local government processes," said SCRD board chair Garry Nohr in a news release.

For more than 40 years, the SCRD has served residents of the Sunshine Coast as one of 28 regional districts that were designed to establish a partnership between electoral areas and member municipalities within their boundaries.

"Much of the work of local governments goes unnoticed," added Nohr. "Local government awareness week provides an opportunity for our municipalities and the SCRD to showcase programs and services that are vital to the daily life of every person here on the Sunshine Coast."

Further contest guidelines are available at www.scrd.ca.
