As of Nov. 10, the Vine Brook Bridge of the popular Suncoaster Trail hike in Pender Harbour will be closed until further notice.
The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) issued a notice that the bridge structure is deteriorating and poses a risk to user safety, and public access is prohibited effective immediately.
Vine Brook Bridge is part of the first phase of the Suncoaster Trail, and is located near the Malaspina substation in Pender Harbour. It is "the single critical access point over the large, steep creek," SCRD staff said via email. The 60-foot bridge was built by volunteers of the Sunshine Coast Trail Society 25 years ago, and made of Douglas fir stringers and bridge supports. Environmental moisture has deteriorated the logs in the passing years.
"Damage to the bridge has been occurring over time," SCRD staff said.
“This closure is being implemented immediately for the safety of the public and so that contractors can begin the work needed to replace the damaged bridge,” Kevin Clarkson, SCRD Parks Services Manager, said in the release. “A timeline for completion of the work has not yet been established.”
The costs of the replacement is not yet known, "but will likely involve engineering and geotechnical work, as well as proper authorizations for a work permit from the province and Sechelt Nation Government District," staff told Coast Reporter via email. Regional trail organization partners will also be approached. The board will be presented with a scope of the project.
The section of the trail is "highly utilized," staff said, for passive and motorized recreation.
While the bridge is closed, hikers can find rerouting signs along Highway 101. The SCRD urges trail goers to “follow off-road vehicle regulations and to proceed with caution when using the highway.”
