The British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) will award some of the highest scholarship bursaries in British Columbia and Yukon again this year.
Every high school graduating student in B.C. and Yukon is eligible for the $10,000 BCYCNA and B.C. Press Council scholarship, making it one of the most accessible scholarships currently available. This is the fifth year in a row the two organizations have come together to bring much-needed funds to students seeking post-secondary education.
Scholarships of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500 will be awarded to the three students who best answer the question: "If you were publisher for a day, how would you change your community newspaper, and why?"
Students must submit a 500-word essay to Coast Reporter by April 29, where one local finalist will be chosen. The finalists' essays will then be forwarded to the BCYCNA, where the top three scholarship winners will be selected.
The BCYCNA is a non-profit membership organization established in 1922. The association represents 109 papers across British Columbia and Yukon with a combined readership of 2.5 million.
The B.C. Press Council was established in 1983. It is a self-regulatory body that governs the newspaper industry in B.C.
