The District of Sechelt has fixed a dangerous section of roadway in West Sechelt just in time for back to school.
The stretch of Norwest Bay Road between Wakefield Road and the West Sechelt Elementary School property has been widened with a bike lane and walking path. The intersection at Wakefield and Norwest Bay has also been improved to provide better sight lines, and new stop signs in the area will help control traffic.
Before the $95,000 project was completed this week, the roadway had very narrow shoulders and deep ditches that made it difficult to walk or bike safely. The lack of proper sightlines for vehicles turning between Wakefield and Norwest Bay roads also made the area hazardous.
Sechelt Mayor John Henderson said the project was approved in the District's budget earlier this year.
"We've been aware of the challenges and the safety concerns from that particular area, so we're pleased we were able to put some resources into it to make it a lot better, a lot safer, a lot nicer looking and that it removes some of the safety concerns and makes it great for the kids who live and play and go to school in the area," he said.
Henderson noted the work was originally scheduled to take place in May or June; however, the strike of unionized workers at the District held the project up. "So I'm delighted that it's done in time for school," he said.
