It turned out to be a false alarm, but for a short time on Saturday, Jan. 9, emergency personnel were on high alert in a joint rescue operation in Davis Bay.
Around 10:30 a.m., Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a call from a concerned citizen who had spotted what appeared to be a person drifting in the waters approximately one mile off shore from Davis Bay.
Const. David Dixon said the person appeared to be wearing a black wet suit and holding onto a yellow object while drifting north across the front of Davis Bay towards Sechelt.
Dixon said the Sechelt fire department, coast guard auxiliary and ambulance paramedics responded to the incident. He said all agencies co-operated in a joint rescue effort.
"After conducting an extensive search of the area, emergency personnel located two floating markers, that from a distance, appeared to be a person holding onto a yellow object," said Dixon in a news release. "While relieved, the Sunshine Coast RCMP would like to thank the Sechelt residents along the Coast who volunteered their personal property to assist in the search effort."
