The Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Project was successfully launched at the Dressing Up for a Cause Gala hosted by Gibsons Christian Life Assembly (CLA) on Nov. 7 at the CLA office in Gibsons.

The gala brought awareness to the sponsorship process and introduced the community to ways in which people can actively get involved.

“We’re greatly encouraged by the local response we’ve received as the project moves steadily forward. This was a reminder of how proud we are to be part of this Coast community that rises to many a challenge to make this world a better place,”
CLA administrator Maria McMullen said.

Funds raised at the gala have helped the CLA towards their goal of sponsoring a Syrian refugee family’s immigration to Canada. The project was spearheaded by CLA, which is working with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, Citizen and Immigration Canada, and the Sunshine Coast Welcoming Communities and partnering with other local churches and businesses.

“We were able to raise initial funds towards the project and bring awareness to the process, which is just as important,” McMullen said.

McMullen reported that since the gala the CLA has received calls from quite a few residents who have asked what they could do to support the project. Some have offered financial support while others have offered support for housing and transportation.

CLA is planning to host an informational gathering in January to update the community on both the progress and future of the project.
