Redrooffs landslides being monitored

The Sunshine Coast Regional District is monitoring two recent landslides off Redrooffs Road in Halfmoon Bay.

"We don't know the degree of risk or when people may be able to occupy their homes," said Paul Fenwick, general manager of community services for the SCRD.

The first slide, reported in late January, affected two neighbouring properties on the ocean side of Redrooffs Road near the intersection with Southwood Road. At one house, which was rented, a backyard retaining wall dropped down and "fairly wide cracks opened up" on the slope below, said Fenwick. The tenants voluntarily left the house.

A trailer and a cottage on the next-door property were unoccupied. The pilings under the cottage appear to be tilting, said Fenwick.

At the bottom of the slope, silty material is flowing out of the bank.

Fenwick said the SCRD hired a surveyor to put markers on three different parts of the property and is watching them for further movement. The regional district is also waiting for a report from a geotechnical engineer to determine whether the dwellings are safe for occupation.

The second slide, also on a Redrooffs Road property, was reported Feb. 1.

"An engineering technician looked at it. Trees had spilled down and there was a crack about 50 feet back from a couple of dwellings," said Fenwick.

No further details on the second slide were available at press time.
