Now in its 87th year, the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal has become an internationally respected and enduring symbol representing service characterized by love and compassion for the poor, the lonely and the oppressed.

Starting in May, officers, employees and volunteers of the Sunshine Coast Salvation Army will bring the Red Shield Appeal to local households, seeking their support to help continue the work of the Army on the Coast.

The Army last year alone provided the following services to families on the Coast: 14 children sent to camp, 92 furniture vouchers, 133 clothing vouchers, 45 to 50 bags of bread/produce distributed every weekday and more than 4,500 meals served.

"As the weather turns, we tend to forget about the people living on our streets, but this problem persists," said Envoy Bruce Kirk. "The Salvation Army is the largest year-round provider of services to the needy of the Sunshine Coast. Our services address physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs and help bring people back into our community.

"We see their faces every day on the Sunshine Coast. They're your friends, neighbours or family members. Your contribution will help meet their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter."

Door-to-door canvassing is set to start on May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m.
