Recycle for Life is The Kidney Foundation's unique fundraising campaign that offers people the opportunity to help save lives, protect the environment and spare landfills. The kidney car program is one of the components of the recycle for life campaign.

Kidney car is a recycling campaign that provides income for the foundation while removing old vehicles from the roads. Owners who donate their old clunkers or unwanted vehicles to the Kidney Foundation will get a free tow, a tax receipt and the knowledge that they made a crucial difference in the life of someone with kidney disease.

On the Sunshine Coast By-Pass Auto Recyclers is helping make it all happen for local residents. Located in Gibsons, By-Pass Recycling is the largest scrap metal and vehicle recycler on the Sunshine Coast. They started in 1994 as a small family used auto parts retailer and expanded to their current position as a major recycling depot that processes more than 1,000 tons of scrap metal every year. Their clients include ICBC, local auto dealers, Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, Sunshine Coast Regional District, School District No. 46, Gibsons and Roberts Creek fire departments, local businesses and the general public.

When By-Pass owner Martin Payne was approached to participate in program and help The Kidney Foundation recycle for life, he jumped at the chance.

"We care about the environment in which we all live, and we're happy to participate in a program that benefits not only the environment, but also people with kidney disease," said Payne in a news release.

To donate to Kidney car, call the kidney Ccar line at 1-800-585-4479. By-Pass Recycling will have a tow truck there within 24 to 48 hours.

The Kidney Foundation is committed to increasing the awareness of organ donation and encourages all British Columbians to register their wishes on-line at www.transplant.bc.ca.
