RCMP seek tool thieves

Sunshine Coast RCMP is looking for the public's assistance after a major theft of tools.

Sunshine Coast RCMP is looking for the public's assistance after a major theft of tools.

According to RCMP, between June 22 and 25, a thief stole a large amount of tools from two industrial machines that were parked up Wilson Creek Forest Service Road.

Detachment media spokesperson Cpl. Steve Chubey said the thief of thieves cut through a heavy duty lock to gain entry into a tool box and gained entry to two excavator compartments. The thief made off with a variety of tools including heavy duty socket sets, combination wrenches, pry bars, grease guns and industrial brush cutting blades. Some of the items had "10-7" or "10-8" engraved into them.

Police are following up with a vehicle of interest that was seen in the area.

Anyone who may have information regarding this theft is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266.

Beach patrols to step up

RCMP will be stepping up their summer enforcement including more beach patrols.

The local detachment is getting some extra money to step up patrols, which will allow for extra officers for visits to area islands, patrols in the Pender Harbour area lakes and more officers on foot and bikes.

Staff Sgt. Herb Berdhal made the announcement at the policing committee meeting on June 25.

He said some of the goals of the summer patrols are to cut down on rowdy and noisy parties on the beach, increasing enforcement of impaired boaters as well as increasing the presence of officers on Keats, Gambier and Thormanby islands, which have been subjected to a recent rash of break-ins and thefts to island cabins.

Ferry overflows

B.C. Ferries say they will look at better ways to handle the overflow line-ups and added summer traffic congestion at the Langdale terminal.

During the June 25 transportation committee, concerns were raised about safety issues the increased traffic brings to the area. According to Ferries, it's difficult to use the overflow lot when there isn't much time between ship departures. However, they are going to change the location of the reservation holder line-up and work on other ways to keep traffic moving on the highway so people aren't inclined to get out of their cars.
