In recent weeks, the communities of the Sunshine Coast have seen several examples of the broad array of resources the RCMP brings to the communities it serves.
On April 4, during the sinking of the HMCS Annapolis, RCMP officers were on the water in the Sunshine Coast patrol vessel, helping to ensure everyone’s safety.
Also on hand were the RCMP West Coast Marine Section, and the Underwater Recovery Team, which plans to use the Annapolis as a training ground in the future.
On April 5, officers from the Sunshine Coast joined the West Coast Marine Section, the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, and Police Dog Services in locating and arresting two fugitives in Salmon Inlet. The fugitives were wanted on Canada-wide warrants, and believed to have broken into over a dozen cabins in the area and stolen numerous items including firearms. Once they were arrested, Forensic Identification Services attended the cabins and processed the crime scenes.
On April 10, officers from the Sunshine Coast’s General Investigation Section climbed aboard Air 8, an RCMP helicopter from Comox, which transported investigators to additional remote cabins accessed by the fugitives.
“The Sunshine Coast detachment is part of the RCMP Lower Mainland District and has access to multiple support units should we need them,” said Staff/Sgt. Vishal Mathura. “Whatever resources are needed, we will find a way to get them and help the communities we serve.”
