RCMP calls related to the Mental Health Act in Sechelt were up from 63 in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024 to 159 during the same period this year, an increase of 152 per cent.
The RCMP's second-quarter report for Sechelt, which covers April 1 to June 30, also noted decreases in auto theft, from 13 to two, mischief to property, down from 60 to 34, and possession of stolen property, which was down from 12 cases to two.
The good news is, the distribution of counterfeit currency went down by 100 per cent, from one during this same time in 2024, to none. Meanwhile, causing a disturbance rose from 29 to 42, a 45 per cent increase, sex offences rose from one in Q2 2024 to six in 2025, and weapons offences dropped from five to three. Mischief to property was down 26 per cent, from 60 in 2024 to 34, this Q2.
There was one incident of theft from mail in this Q2, which was a first in several years, and bike theft remained static at one for both 2024 and 2025 for the same period.
Meanwhile, as with the Q2 of 2024, there were zero reports of trespass at night. Auto theft was down from 13 to two, for Q2 2025, and theft from vehicle was also down, from 30 to 25.
Breaking and entering business files were up from seven to 12, while residential stats show a decrease from six to five for this quarter. Fraud was down considerably, from 25 to 14, while shoplifting was up from seven to nine.
Each quarter, the RCMP presents its Gibsons-related stats to that town council during a public meeting. That is not the case with the District of Sechelt and at the end of each quarter, Coast Reporter makes requests to both the RCMP and district for a copy of the report.
Lindsay Vickers, manager of communications for the district told Coast Reporter this week that staff is working on creating a dedicated space on its website for these updates so they can be posted each quarter and made available to the public.
