Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Nov. 9 to 17:
Theft from Jobsite
• Between Nov. 9 and 13, a suspect or suspects stole a number of items from a site in the 6700 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, including a red and black Honda 5500 generator with the numbers 372490 engraved on it, a Jobsite brand handheld grinder, and a Dewalt circular saw with the letters MC marked on it. Anyone with any information about this is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-7918.
Impaired Driving by Liquor
• On Nov. 13, a witness reported a two-vehicle incident in the 5700 block of Mermaid Street, Sechelt, after the first vehicle struck a parked empty second vehicle. Police located the first vehicle and driver in the middle of the road and noticed signs of possible impairment by alcohol. The driver, who advised he’d recently consumed alcohol, was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a vehicle and transported back to the detachment to provide breath samples. Based on the results, the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition, and released on a promise to appear for court for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The file is still under investigation.
Scam
• On Nov. 13, a Coast resident reported falling victim to a common scam after an unknown male called to advise the resident that the company that provided the warranty on his computer was shutting down and that the resident was due a refund. The resident allowed the scammer to access his computer to process the “refund.”
The scammer then called the resident back a short while later to say that too large a refund had been issued and the resident would need to e-transfer a portion back to the scammer. The resident did as he was instructed but when the scammer called again requesting the resident go to his bank, the resident grew suspicious and spoke to his bank manager. The resident was told this was a common overpayment type of scam, and he has since frozen his accounts and had his computer serviced by a local professional. Speeding
• On Nov. 14, while conducting radar enforcement on Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt, police witnessed a southbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the 50 kilometre zone. Radar confirmed the vehicle was travelling at more than double the posted speed limit, so police conducted a traffic stop. The driver, who admitted being late for work, was served a violation ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Hit and Run
• On Nov. 15 at approximately 2 a.m., a resident in the 5600 block of Osprey Road, Sechelt, reported a hit and run after hearing a loud bang and discovering a suspect vehicle fleeing after hitting the resident’s parked vehicle. The suspect vehicle, which caused noticeable damage to the other vehicle, is described as a blue mini van. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-7950.
Found Property
• On Nov. 15 at approximately 7 p.m., a passerby reported a mobility scooter found tipped over onto its side with the horn blaring on a path near Stewart Road and Gower Point Road, Gibsons. The resident and police searched the area but did not find any signs of the rider. Police are following up with information found on the keys to try to locate the owner. Theft
• On Nov. 15 between 6 and 7 p.m., a suspect stole a phone from a client’s bag that was stored in an unsecured locker at a business in the 5500 block of Shorncliffe Avenue, Sechelt. The stolen phone is described as an iPhone 7 with a small crack on the front and in a dark green case. The serial number is 353-068-093-123-628. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2018-7978.
• Between Nov. 7 and 17, a suspect stole a fire pit from a residence in the 8100 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. The fire pit, described as a circular fibreglass faux-concrete model, came with a 20-pound propane tank underneath. During the same time period, a suspect damaged a tent that had been left assembled on site.
Collision
• On November 17, around 8 a.m., Emergency Health Services and police attended a single-vehicle incident at the top of the bypass near the Langdale BC Ferries terminal. The northbound vehicle driver advised he had hit an icy patch, lost control, hit the centre median and then bounced over to the right side median before coming to a stop. The driver (the lone occupant) did not sustain any life-threatening injuries but the vehicle was heavily damaged. Police noted the roads were very slippery, and a witness corroborated the driver’s account. The vehicle was towed and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Nov. 18, Emergency Health Services reported a single-vehicle rollover with one person trapped in a ditch near North Road and Chamberlin Road, Gibsons. Police and the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department attended and located the vehicle on its side in the ditch. The driver and passenger, both of whom sustained minor injuries, were able to exit the vehicle on their own. The driver advised that she had been playing vehicle hide and seek with a second vehicle and that the second vehicle had passed her in the left lane, causing her to lose control and go into the ditch. The driver of the second vehicle, who’d stopped to offer assistance, was issued a violation ticket for passing on the left unsafely. The ditched vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver and passenger were taken to hospital for assessment. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
Theft from Vehicle
• Overnight on Nov. 17, a suspect gained entry to two unlocked vehicles parked in the 4900 block of Highway 101, Sechelt, and stole a wallet containing bank and identification cards, a CO2 detector and an assortment of tools. One of the stolen bank cards was later used fraudulently at a business in Sechelt. Police are reviewing surveillance video and the file is still under investigation.
