Two drivers were issued various violation tickets and an 18-year-old Gibsons man escaped with minor injuries after what RCMP describe as a street racing incident in Gibsons Tuesday night.
On Oct. 22 at 8 p.m., RCMP along with the Gibsons fire department and paramedics were dispatched to a report of a single-vehicle collision in the 1100 block of Chaster Road.
Police arrived and found a lone male trapped in an overturned vehicle, his hand trapped between the door frame and the ground, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Steve Chubey in a news release. A second male arrived on scene and claimed to have been involved in the collision. Fire crews freed the male, who admitted to consuming liquor earlier in the evening.
Chubey said a breath sample was obtained, which revealed trace amounts of alcohol in his body.
Although he was under the legal limit, as a class 7 (new) driver, he was driving contrary to his restrictions, which was to have a zero blood alcohol content, said Chubey. The male was transported to St. Mary's Hospital by BC Ambulance with minor injuries.
Chubey said police determined through witness accounts that the two had been street racing at excessive speeds on Chaster Road, when one of the vehicles clipped the bumper of the other vehicle, causing it to spin out and overturn.
Both drivers were issued violation tickets for drive without due care and attention and their vehicles were automatically impounded for seven days, said Chubey. The injured male received an additional ticket for drive contrary to restrictions for driving with alcohol in his system, as well as a 12-hour driving prohibition.
