A Sunshine Coast RCMP investigation continues into a serious three-vehicle collision that closed Highway 101 for several hours last Thursday afternoon.
On Nov. 3 at approx 4:20 p.m., RCMP and Sea to Sky Highway Patrol responded to the accident in Roberts Creek on Highway 101 just south of Cliff Gilker Park.
According to Cpl. Steve Chubey, a southbound Mercedes Benz driven by a 41-year-old Gibsons woman, was struck head-on by a northbound Ford Explorer which crossed the double solid centre line and collided with the Mercedes Benz.
Chubey said a 50-year-old male from Sechelt was driving the Ford Explorer.
The third vehicle involved was a Dodge Sprinter van that was travelling southbound and struck the rear of the Ford Explorer after it spun out after the initial collision.
"The Roberts Creek fire department, using the Jaws of Life, extricated the woman from her vehicle," said Chubey. "She suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Vancouver General Hospital. The male driver of the Ford Explorer was also airlifted by helicopter to VGH with undetermined injuries. The male driver of the Dodge Sprinter van was not injured."
He said a team from the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstruction Service attended to assist with investigation. The investigation necessitated the closure of Highway 101 with north and southbound traffic diverted onto Lower Road in Robert Creek to bypass the accident scene with the highway opening up again after 9 p.m. that evening.
