Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR), Station 12 Halfmoon Bay, was called into action twice over the recent long weekend.
On Saturday, Aug. 4, at 12:40 p.m. the SAR crew responded from the base at Secret Cove to a call for assistance from a vessel broken down north of Merry Island.
Later that day, at 3:25 p.m. the crew of five aboard the fast response vessel Ken Moore, was tasked into Sechelt Inlet to look for a canoeist reported overdue and missing in the Tuwanek area.
Following a lengthy search commencing at Nine Mile Point, the crew spotted the missing paddler at Oyster Beach, and, after further searching; the crew located four other family members, including a two-year-old child, in a small canoe.
All were taken aboard the Ken Moore, and, along with their canoe, they were ferried up the coast to safety ashore.
"On an extremely hot summer's night, the operation ended when the SAR crew returned to base at Secret Cove at 8:30 p.m., pleased with the days' efforts," said unit media liaison Drew McKee.
