School District No. 46 (SD46) trustees want to know what you think about the idea of reducing the number of elected trustees in the November municipal election.

On Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at Chatelech Secondary School there will be a public hearing about reducing the number of trustees from seven to five. All members of the public are welcome to attend. Written submissions on the topic will be accepted until March 18 and they can either be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Colleen McPhedran, School District 46, PO Box 220, Gibsons, B.C. Budget

Assistant secretary-treasurer for SD46 John Pritchard presented the 2010/11 amended annual budget at the Feb. 8 meeting.

The amended budget sits at $36,710,649, down a half a million dollars from the previous school year.

"The largest piece of that change was school surpluses," said Pritchard. "In 2008/2009 the school surpluses were just over $1 million. In 2009/2010 and into 2011 it was just over $500,000, so that's why you see at the bottom line a net decrease in our budget of half a million dollars from $37.2 million to $36.7 million."

Substance abuse

Parents are invited to attend a talk on substance abuse prevention with Sheena Campbell, prevention co-ordinator for addiction services, on Tuesday, Feb. 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The discussion will take place at Sechelt Elementary School and will include things like how drugs and alcohol are affecting our kids, what types of drugs are out there, how to communicate with children about substance abuse and where families can get more information, resources and support.

Education week

Education week is March 28 to April 4. SD46 plans to have displays in the malls to mark the occasion and invited community members into the schools to see first hand the exciting learning that is taking place locally.
