It was a morning of connection and celebration aboard Island Discovery as the Powell River (Westview) to Texada Island (Blubber Bay) route was crewed entirely by women for International Women’s Day (March 8).

For the first time in BC Ferries’ history, every crew position on board was staffed by a woman, including the master, mate, deckhands, senior chief engineer and engine room assistant, according to a media release from BC Ferries.

“I am proud to be part of the celebrations today. Not only are more women coming into the marine industry, but they're excelling in the marine industry,” stated Jodi Gaudet, senior chief engineer. “When there are women on the crew, it gives you an opportunity to support and be supported, and to share experiences that you’ve both had.”

Members of BC Ferries’ senior leadership team joined the crew to honour the valuable contributions of those women who play an integral role in connecting communities and transporting passengers safely along the coast of BC.

“This is an opportunity to acknowledge the strides made and recommit to the journey towards a more equitable future,” stated Melanie Lucia, vice-president, customer experience. “We’re seeing more women on deck, in the engine rooms, in the trades and in leadership positions. As women see women succeeding, that growth will continue.”

BC Ferries is continuously working to ensure a safe and supportive work environment where gender equity is at the forefront, according to the release. Recent employee initiatives include implementing all-gender change rooms and washroom facilities as well as providing free feminine hygiene products. All-gender washrooms and free feminine hygiene products can also be found on board our vessels for passengers.

"This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Inspire Inclusion” and supporting employment equity and diversity in the workplace is paramount to BC Ferries," the release stated.
