At approximately 5:38 pm on July 5, Powell River RCMP, EHS and Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a report of a hit and run involving a vehicle and a 10-year-old child at the intersection of Alberni Street and Marine Avenue. The driver of a green GMC truck struck the child as he crossed Marine on the crosswalk.

The driver left the scene, but returned shortly after, admitting that he had hit the child. Once EHS and Powell River Fire Rescue arrived on scene, the driver of the vehicle left again without providing any information.

Police obtained the licence plate of the suspect vehicle and attended the residence of the driver, but he was not home.

At approximately 9:19 pm, the driver of the truck, a 60-year-old male from Powell River, turned himself in at the RCMP detachment. He was arrested for failing to remain at the scene of an accident and will appear in court at a later time.

The child only received minor injuries as a result of the collision.
