Sunshine Coast RCMP are hoping a distinctive-looking gas canister will help them to identify anyone related to a fire near the Sechelt Airport, which they believe was intentionally set.

First responders were called to a site near the Sechelt Airport Forest Service Road the morning of July 4 after receiving a call that an abandoned older model Ford F150 was on fire. When they arrived the truck had been “destroyed” by a blaze and “and the surrounding ground cover also smoldering with some ground fire spreading up the bank,” according to an RCMP statement.

While the area was “immediately extinguished,” the fire could have had “a catastrophic impact to the area,” the release said.

RCMP are now asking anyone to come forward who may have seen someone carrying a “distinctive gas can” left at the scene, or with other information related to the fire.

People can call the RCMP at 604-885-2266 and refer to file number 2021-4422.
