Police Report: Sechelt thief takes vehicle on joyride

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 7 to 14:

Overnight on Sept. 7, a suspect gained entry to a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue, Sechelt, by jimmying the door, and appears to have taken it for a joyride before returning the vehicle to its parking spot. The suspect also stole a number of items from inside the vehicle including a BB rifle-style gun and some keys. Police are reviewing security footage from the area and the file is still under investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-6113.

Theft

• On Sept. 8, between 1 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., a suspect gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked at a business in the 4700 block of Highway 101, Davis Bay, and stole a bag containing jewelry and personal belongings while the owner visited with friends a short distance away. The stolen items include a Movado watch with a gold elastic band, a heart-shaped necklace containing photos of loved ones, a blue cameo, a Samsung tablet with the name Josephine on it, and a book of family history. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2021-6178.
Fail to Stop

• On Sept. 7, a hit and run occurred in the parking lot at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the first vehicle struck the driver’s side of a parked vehicle, causing a large scrape in the process. A witness saw the driver of the first vehicle get out of her vehicle to look at the second vehicle but then the driver got back into her vehicle and drove away without leaving any information for the absent second vehicle driver. Fortunately, the witness was able to note the first vehicle’s licence plate and police will be following up with the registered owner. The file is still under investigation.

• On Sept. 7, a hit and run was reported on Ti’ta Way near Highway 101, Sechelt, after the first vehicle was struck by the second vehicle and the second vehicle driver failed to stop to exchange information with the first vehicle driver. Police located the suspect second driver and determined she did not possess a valid driver’s licence; she was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s licence and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Police are also submitting a driver’s fitness review request to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.
Collision

• On Sept. 7, police attended a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of Tyler Road and Tower Road, Sechelt, after the first vehicle struck a second parked vehicle, causing it to roll out into the middle of the road. Fortunately, the parked vehicle was unoccupied and the unimpaired driver of the first vehicle did not report any serious injuries. However, due to damage, both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Sept. 7, police attended a two-vehicle incident involving a vehicle and a bus on Cowrie Street near Inlet Avenue, Sechelt. The vehicle driver reported the eastbound bus struck and damaged the open driver’s side door. The bus driver stopped and exchanged information with the vehicle owner before continuing on his route. As the door on the vehicle was no longer operable, the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Sept. 9, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Joe Road, Roberts Creek, after the driver of the first vehicle looked down briefly and when she looked up, realized too late that traffic in front of her had stopped. The first driver was unable to stop in time and collided into the rear of the second vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles. The second vehicle driver was taken to Sechelt Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and his vehicle was towed from the scene. The first vehicle driver, who did not require any medical treatment at the scene, was issued a notice and order to have her vehicle inspected.

The matter has been referred to ICBC.
