There were lots of treats and not too many tricks on Halloween night, according to police.
Sunshine Coast RCMP Staff Sgt. Brad Zalys said police opened 26 files after 5 p.m., with no major incidents reported. There were six files attributed to firecracker/fireworks, a couple of minor break-ins, three driver's licence suspensions due to intoxicated drivers, a minor motor vehicle accident at Highway 101 and Menacher Road, and two intoxicated males were lodged in RCMP cells and were later released when sober.
"Nothing major, and in general it was a good night," Zalys said. "We had a lot of members on the streets. My feeling is it's better to be prepared than be caught off guard. Things can escalate pretty quickly if you don't have a handle on things. I think the fact that it was a week night helped. As a personal observation, I think the fireworks bylaw in effect in Gibsons worked quite well this year. As a resident of Gibsons, I didn't see the build-up to Halloween with fireworks as in years past. If we can get a full Coast-wide bylaw in effect, I think that would help even more."
Public Halloween festivities were well attended up and down the Coast.
Sunnycrest Mall was the site for the Harvest Festival where hundreds of little ghouls and goblins played games and collected candy. The Roberts Creek Hall had a successful dance as did Egmont at the Egmont Community Hall and the sky was lit up with fantastic fireworks displays put on by the Sechelt Indian Band in Sechelt and in Pender Harbour by the Pender Harbour Fire Department.
