Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 6 to 13:
Impaired / Prohibited driver
• Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, an officer pulled over a vehicle on Sechelt Inlet Road near Kunut Avenue. The driver had bloodshot eyes and smelled of liquor. Further investigation determined that the male was still prohibited from driving after previously receiving a 90-day driving prohibition for allegedly driving while impaired. The 39-year-old driver also failed a roadside screening device on this night. He was arrested for driving while impaired and driving while prohibited, and later released on a promise to appear in court.
Collisions
• On Feb. 7, police attended a two-vehicle collision westbound in the 6300 block of Norwest Bay Road, Sechelt, after the first vehicle stopped behind a line of cars stopped for a school bus, and was rear-ended by a second vehicle. Both vehicles sustained damage but were still drivable, and no serious injuries were reported. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• Around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, police attended a three-vehicle collision southbound on Highway 101 at Flume Road, Roberts Creek, after one vehicle slowed down to make a right turn onto Flume Road and was rear-ended by a second vehicle which was unable to stop in time. This sent the first vehicle into another vehicle stopped at the stop sign on Flume Road. One vehicle was still drivable but the first and third vehicles had to be towed from the scene. No major injuries were reported by any of the drivers and the matter has been referred to ICBC.
• On Feb. 8, at around 8:30 p.m., police attended a single-vehicle collision southbound on Highway 101 near Selma Park Road, Sechelt, after a vehicle lost control going around a corner, fishtailed, and ended up striking a utility pole. The driver was taken to Sechelt Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and the vehicle had to be towed from the scene.
• Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, police attended a single-vehicle collision at the bottom of School Road and Marine Drive in Gibsons, after the vehicle lost traction on the snow-covered road surface and slid into a concrete barrier in a parking lot. The driver was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and the vehicle – which sustained significant damage – was towed from the scene.
Thefts
• On Feb. 6, a theft of an iPad Mini was reported at a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. The iPad was noticed missing on Feb. 2, but wasn’t confirmed until all staff had been spoken with. The serial number of the stolen iPad is F9FR382WFCM5, Model ME276LL/A. Police are reviewing surveillance video footage. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 17-681.
• On Feb. 6, a female shoplifter was caught on surveillance video at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. The shoplifter was seen taking a box of shoes off the shelf, removing the shoes from the box, and concealing them inside her jacket before leaving the premises. The female was seen in the company of a distinctive looking male, who was arrested the next day after he was found intoxicated in the middle of the highway. During the arrest, police noticed he was wearing the same shoes stolen the day before. The shoes have been seized and the file is still under investigation.
Break and enters
• Overnight on Feb. 8, construction materials were stolen from a business in the 5500 block of Trail Avenue, Sechelt. The thieves stole a pallet of metre by metre red-flecked black rubber matting tiles, copper wire, and other scrap metal that had been stored in the parking lot. On Feb. 7, suspects also triggered the alarm and gained access to a storage unit in the same area, but nothing appears to have been stolen.
• Overnight on Feb. 9, a restaurant on Gibsons Way was broken into. Four bottles of liquor were stolen. Police were able to see footprints from the suspect in the snow around the building. Anyone with information about this break-in is asked to call Sunshine Coast RCMP.
• Sometime between Feb. 3 and 10, a thief broke into a home in the 8000 block of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. Numerous personal items, electronics, tools and liquor were taken. Police are still investigating, and in this case police were also able to locate the suspect’s footprints in the snow.
