Police Report

RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Dec. 8 to 15:

Arrest warrants

• During the afternoon of Dec. 14, police were called by staff at a restaurant in Sechelt, because an intoxicated male was causing a disturbance. The male fled prior to police arrival, but officers located him a short time later at a liquor store in Sechelt. The male initially provided a false name to one officer, but another officer arrived and recognized the male from previous dealings. He was arrested for obstruction, breaching his court-ordered conditions, and for four outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Break and enter / thefts

• On Dec. 13, a seasonal resident returned to his cabin on Gambier Island and found that a beige Stealth P12 6MP trail camera and a black Motomaster Eliminator 800 power pack had been stolen from his property. It appears the actual theft occurred early on Dec. 1 and two suspects were caught on security camera. Police are reviewing footage. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-8558.

• Between Dec. 12 and 13, a thief smashed a window to gain access to a vehicle parked in the 4700 block of Laurel Avenue and rifled through it, but it does not appear that anything was actually stolen. A second report was received where the thief gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 4700 block of Laurel Avenue and stole a large amount of change that had been in the centre console. The console was also damaged in the incident.

• Around noon on Dec. 14, a resident went to her vacant house in Gibsons and found a man sleeping inside. The man was spoken to by police, and said he had recently been evicted and is currently homeless. He was cooperative and had no related history of breaking and entering. The man said he is going through a difficult time. As there was no damage to the residence and nothing taken, the homeowner was not interested in pressing charges. The man apologized and left without a problem.

Collisions / traffic

• On Dec. 10, police attended a single vehicle collision in the 13300 block of Highway 101, Garden Bay, after a passerby noticed a vehicle overturned in a ditch. Tire tracks indicate that the vehicle was travelling southbound when it veered off the road, entered the ditch, struck two trees and landed on its roof. The injured driver, who was not impaired, managed to crawl out of the vehicle and was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Speed is believed to be a factor in the incident. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Dec. 11, a possible impaired driver was reported heading into Sechelt from Selma Park Road. The vehicle was reported to be drifting into the on-coming lane and swerving for no apparent reason. Police located the driver at her residence and confirmed she was not impaired. Police noted the vehicle’s passenger side mirror was hanging off the vehicle and the driver advised she believed she struck a parked vehicle on the corner of Anchor Road and Trail Avenue and that she had come home to report the collision. Police could not locate any damaged vehicles in the area and no related hit and runs have been reported to date.

• On Dec. 12, police attended a single vehicle incident after the BC Ambulance Service reported they were en-route to a rolled over vehicle in the 2200 block of Port Mellon Highway. The vehicle, which had various straps and equipment tethering it to a nearby hydro-pole in an apparent attempt to right the vehicle, was found locked and unoccupied. Police were unable to locate the owner and the owner’s cell phone was found in the vehicle. The owner later contacted RCMP and advised he’d been driving too fast around the corner and lost control. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Dec. 14, police attended a two-vehicle incident in the 6300 block of Highway 101 after a witnessed reported an unoccupied vehicle had rolled out of a driveway, across the highway, and into a ditch. The owner of the vehicle was on scene when police arrived and advised that he had parked the automatic vehicle an hour earlier but no parking brake had been applied. A second motorist advised she had been driving northbound when the driverless vehicle rolled out and, despite her attempts to miss it, it struck the rear of her car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and damage was minor. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
