Police Report

RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Nov. 23 to 30:

Fire alarm at the Legion

• Around 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, RCMP were called to the Sechelt Legion after a patron began causing a disturbance and refused to leave. Just as police were arriving, the man allegedly pulled the fire alarm and took off running. RCMP located the man a short distance away, but he resisted arrest and was taken to cells for the night. Police are recommending the man be charged with false alarm of fire.

Collisions, hit and run

• Police received calls about two separate single-vehicle collisions on the morning of Nov. 24, one on North Road at Bridgeman Road and one at Pratt Road and Rosamund Road in Gibsons. In both cases, icy roads were a contributing factor. Fortunately, no serious injuries or damage to vehicles were reported.

• On Nov. 26 at approximately 12:30 p.m., a hit and run was reported at a business in the 7800 block of Fawn Road, Halfmoon Bay, after a vehicle was caught on surveillance video hopping over the concrete curb, striking a load-bearing post and breaking it. The male driver, who wore a bandana on his head and is described as about six feet tall with a slim build, got out of his dark green or black Volvo, looked at the damage and then entered the business. The driver looked at the damage again before driving away without advising staff at the business; staff later recovered a plastic portion of the Volvo’s front bumper. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-8206.

• On Nov. 30, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Xenichen Avenue, Sechelt, after one vehicle pulled out of a parking lot in an attempt to make a left turn onto the highway and was struck by a second eastbound vehicle. Fortunately, none of the drivers or passengers in either vehicle sustained serious injuries. The driver of the first vehicle, who had an expired driver’s licence, advised he misjudged the speed of the eastbound vehicle when he attempted to make his left hand turn onto the highway. The driver of the first vehicle was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s licence, a one-month notice of driving prohibition and an unlicensed driving prohibition.

Scam

• On Nov. 24, a Coast resident reported a scam after receiving messages on his cellphone saying he had to pay a fine through uKash or pay safe card vouchers for viewing child pornography. The resident, who had not been viewing child pornography, did not respond to the message. This is one of the biggest scams circulating at the moment. Impaired and unlicensed drivers

• On Nov. 30, a possible impaired driver was reported in the 6000 block of Lighthouse Avenue, Sechelt. Police located the suspect vehicle nearby and noted the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver refused to provide a breath sample, which resulted in her receiving an automatic 90-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as her vehicle being impounded for 30 days.

• On the evening of Nov. 30, police received a report of a possible impaired driver northbound in the 5900 block of Garden Bay Road from a witness who provided the licence plate and description of a vehicle that was swerving and crossing the centre line. The vehicle then crossed the centre line and went into a ditch but was able to reverse out and continue on towards Madeira Park. While police made patrols and attended the registered owner’s residence, a second complaint came in of a vehicle that had gone over an embankment and into a ravine in the 13200 block of Highway 101 with the driver inside. Local volunteer firefighters assisted the driver and helped extricate her from the vehicle. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, admitted to police that she’d consumed alcohol but refused to provide adequate breath samples for a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver was issued a violation ticket for no driver’s licence, a 24-hour driving prohibition, and charges of failing to provide a breath sample are being recommended.

• On the evening of Nov. 30, police stopped a vehicle eastbound on Highway 101 near Tita Way, Sechelt, that did not have its tail lights on. During the stop, the driver admitted he did not hold a valid driver’s licence. Further investigation found that the driver was also a vehicle impound and an unlicensed driving prohibition candidate. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was served his driving prohibition.

Theft and mischief

• On Nov. 25, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt, after the male suspect entered the store, took an item off the shelf and left the premises on foot. Staff tried to detain the suspect but he refused to cooperate and continued on. Police located the well-known suspect and arrested him for theft under $5,000 without issue. The file is under investigation.

• On Nov. 25, a vandal keyed a vehicle parked in the BC Ferries Langdale employee parking lot. The vandal etched in the initials TBY into the side of the vehicle. Two weeks prior, the car owner advised a previously unreported incident where a vandal had keyed in a two-foot-long scratch along the same side. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-8210.
