Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Aug. 11 to 18:
Impaired drivers
• In the early evening of Aug. 11, a witness reported two males in Garden Bay who appeared to be intoxicated while in a boat. Police were updated when the males were seen driving away from Sakinaw Lake. Police located the vehicle on Highway 101 near Porter Road, Madeira Park, and initiated a traffic stop. The learner driver, who emitted the odour of alcohol, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. Based on the results, the driver was issued a violation ticket for driving contrary to restrictions, a 24-hour driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.
• Also during the evening of Aug. 11, a witness reported a vehicle that had been swerving in its lane and almost hit an oncoming bus. The witness provided a description of the vehicle and driver as well as licence plate and last known location in Sechelt. Police located the suspect vehicle and spoke with the driver, who advised he’d consumed a couple of beer shortly prior to driving. The driver was issued and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test, and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver’s vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.
• On Aug. 15, witnesses reported a possible impaired driver southbound on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek after the vehicle was seen swerving in its lane. Police located the vehicle and attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver initially failed to stop. Then, the driver stopped abruptly before pulling over to the side of the road. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, was issued a roadside alcohol-screening test and based on the results was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Traffic incidents
On Aug. 12, an empty vehicle was reported rolling down Inlet Avenue toward Teredo Street, Sechelt. The unlocked vehicle, which had been left in neutral, was stopped by two passers-by who managed to stop the vehicle from rolling into the intersection and causing any traffic incidents. The apologetic registered owner, who had parked the vehicle at a nearby business for an appointment, was issued a violation ticket for unsecured motor vehicle.
• On Aug. 12, a multiple-vehicle incident occurred in the 1800 block of Highway 101 in Roberts Creek after the leading vehicle in the northbound lane stopped to make an abrupt left turn, causing the subsequent four vehicles to collide into one another. Two sustained minor damage and were driveable, but two others had to be towed from the scene and one of the drivers was taken to hospital for minor injuries.
Mischief / Thefts
• Between Aug. 10 and 13, suspects threw several rocks and a large piece of timber through the windows of an excavator parked in a wooded area near Gale Avenue South, Sechelt. The suspects also stole two 20-litre cans, one containing diesel fuel, the other water. The file is still under investigation.
• Overnight on Aug. 12, a thief broke a lock on a metal storage container located behind the Habitat for Humanity recycling centre located in the 1000 block of Venture Way, Gibsons, and stole seven full bags of recyclable bottles and cans. Nothing else was stolen or damaged.
• On August 13, at around 2:30 am, in the 5800 block of Medusa Street, Sechelt, a thief gained entry to a locked vehicle that had its windows rolled down about an inch and stole a Pentax X5 camera, two pairs of prescription glasses (including a pair of Chanel brand frames), a silver water bottle and a USB charger. A witness reported seeing a young clean-cut adult male with two backpacks on a bicycle looking into the vehicle at the time of the reported theft. The file is still under investigation.
At around 4 a.m. on Aug. 15, a thief gained entry to a business in the 4300 block of Highway 101 by prying out a window. The thief then emptied a display case full of Maui Jim sunglasses before fleeing the premises. The file is still under investigation. • On Aug. 15 at around 3:30 p.m., a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 200 block of Gower Point Road, Gibsons. The suspect, described as a Caucasian female in her mid-40s, was about five feet seven inches tall, had dark hair in a messy bun, was wearing a hot pink sweater and carried a basket with a dark purse. The suspect left the business while staff were busy with other customers and went into an adjacent business where she left from the rear exit. The stolen item is a high-end St. James brand red wool sweater with buttons on the front. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 15-5712.
