Police issue warnings after house party

Sunshine Coast RCMP have several investigations underway following what they are describing as "an out of control" house party last Friday night in Sechelt.

According to RCMP, members responded to a house party in the 5800 block of Klahanie Drive off Sechelt Inlet Road around 10 p.m. on Feb. 3.

"Upon arriving, it was clear that the party was out of control, as the host of the party could not be found amongst the estimated 150 attendees, ages ranging from 15 to their early 20's," said Cpl. Steve Chubey. "Police were told that the parents of the host were on holiday out of country. It took nearly two hours for police to clear the party, resulting in two arrests for public intoxication."

Chubey said as a result of the party, several other files were generated including two single-vehicle motor vehicle collisions.

He said RCMP attended the first collision at approximately 11:45 p.m. in the 6900 block of Sechelt Inlet Road.

"When police arrived, it had been discovered that a Honda CRV was overloaded with passengers, had gone off road and flipped and that the driver was still trapped in the vehicle," said Chubey. "Police confirmed that the vehicle had a total of nine occupants and had just left the party on Klahanie Drive."

He said injuries were sustained to six of the occupants, none of which were serious, although he said, that the occupants were extremely lucky, as the collision could have just as easily proven fatal.

Chubey confirmed that RCMP has initiated an impaired driving investigation against the 17-year-old female driver.

The second single collision was reported to the RCMP near Coricle Street in Sechelt shortly after midnight.

"Police attended and spoke to the driver and confirmed that alcohol was not a factor," Chubey said. "Both airbags had deployed after the driver failed to negotiate a corner, causing the vehicle to go into a ditch before hitting a large rock and trees. No injuries were sustained. RCMP are still investigating the crash."

Chubey said RCMP will be following up with the occupants of the residence and intend on issuing a bylaw ticket for noise causing disturbance, which carries a $100 fine.

"The RCMP would also like to remind homeowners that it is illegal to allow minors to drink in a residence under your control and that they may be held civilly liable for guests leaving their residence after consuming alcohol," Chubey said.
