Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating a pair of accidents that sent one man to hospital and tied up traffic on Hwy. 101 Wednesday night.

Shortly before 6 p.m., RCMP responded to a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle in the 1400 block of Hwy. 101.

Witnesses at the scene reported to police that the pedestrian had just exited the transit bus when he suddenly started to cross the highway and into the path of a vehicle travelling north.

"The vehicle travelling north swerved to miss the pedestrian but still made contact with him," said Const. Kurt Rosenberg of Sunshine Coast Traffic Services. "The pedestrian, a 42-year-old Gibsons resident, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with a severe leg injury. One lane of traffic was blocked while police investigated."

To make matters worse for motorists, while police were investigating the collision, another crash was reported just south of the first near Henry Road on Hwy. 101.

Rosenberg said three vehicles were travelling north on Hwy. 101 in heavy traffic when the first started to slow due to the backed-up traffic resulting from the pedestrian crash.

"The second vehicle could not stop in time and hit the first. The third vehicle could not stop in time and hit the second," he said. "Damage was such that two of the three vehicles had to be towed from the scene. No one was injured in the crash."
