The only disc golf course on the lower Sunshine Coast may soon have a new volunteer stewardship agreement.

At a July 15 Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) meeting, staff recommended entering into a memorandum of understanding with the Sunshine Coast Disc Golf Association (SCDGA) to support the stewardship and maintenance of the disc golf course at Shirley Macey Park in West Howe Sound.

The disc golf course was first established after an agreement between the SCRD and BC Disc Sports Society in 2003 but, staff told the board, the society has not been active for years and the course has been maintained on an “ad-hoc” basis. With the growing popularity of Shirley Macey Park, the course use has increased significantly, the staff report said, and requires improved signs and re-routing part of the course.

The SCDGA was established as a non-profit in 2019, and pitched a since-rejected course for Halfmoon Bay. It has also been maintaining the Shirley Macey course on an informal basis.

The recommendation to sign the MOU is expected to be adopted at the July 22 SCRD board meeting.

“The course will remain free and accessible to all,” the staff report stated.
