The Sunshine Coast Regional District will reinstall the former sign, after 'constructive feedback' from residents.

Residents in Roberts Creek have noticed that a sign was recently erected at the Gulf Road beach access that warns that the trail cannot be used between dusk and dawn. (Pictured is the beach access.)

The new sign at the Gulf Road beach access point in Roberts Creek has been removed.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) planned to remove the sign after outcry from residents, but someone else got to it first. In a March 13 post on social media, the regional district thanked residents for their “constructive feedback” on the sign. The sign, which was installed in late February, prohibited public access to the beach between dusk and dawn, and prohibited campfires on the trail. Public access to beaches in the regional district is usually restricted between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., unless otherwise posted.

“While well intentioned, we acknowledge that residents felt the sign did not send the right message,” the SCRD’s post said. “The old signage, which is aligned in messaging with other beach access signs will be re-installed.”

The regional district also said it will take this feedback into consideration as it moves forward with a new park sign guidelines project.

“In the coming months, as we get into warmer weather, the SCRD will work on some public awareness materials around the use of beach accesses and the importance of them being used responsibly.”
