Thomas Mulcair, the New Democrats first elected member of Parliament in Quebec, and now a front-runner in the federal leadership race will visit the Sunshine Coast on Dec. 7.
The NDP will host Mulcair at a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Hall.
Gibsons NDP member and former NDP candidate Judith Wilson said party members and supporters are keen to see Mulcair in person as he is seen as someone with a clear potential of leading the NDP to form a national government.
"It's great he is coming to the Sunshine Coast," she said.
Wilson said Mulcair, supported by 33 of Quebec's NDP MPs, is seen by many to be the most likely of the NDP leadership hopefuls to keep the seats in Quebec.
"In winning in Quebec initially and in building on the first success Mulcair has demonstrated an ability to reach out to people, especially young people, who have not supported the NDP in the past," said Wilson.
She said Mulcair's record on environmental issues are likely to bring him considerable support in B.C. and his visit to the Sunshine Coast is welcomed by local supporters who want someone who can represent the whole country and who sees B.C. as important.
